| Limb reconstruction includes treatments for bones, joints, and soft tissue (muscles, tendons, nerves, and vessels) of the upper and lower limbs. It is performed to correct lesions that may be congenital, acquired during growth or occur as a result of trauma. Reconstruction can be accomplished either by surgery or through the use of orthotics or external prosthesis.
Our website and mission This website provides information on limb lengthening and reconstruction and is written for patients, general practitioners, and consultants. The aim of this site is to provide information on a number of adult and childhood pathologies as well as treatment options relevant to limb reconstruction. Contemporary trends in treatments for limb lengthening and reconstruction are included, however, this information is not intended to supplant a general textbook on orthopedic conditions. Other therapeutic options are discussed on other websites, in books or in medical publications. Details of disease and treatment complications are readily available from other websites such as Medline (See 'Links/Medline'). | This site provides information on state-of-the-art techniques for which information is often difficult to obtain. These techniques form the basis of future treatments that are not yet commonly in use. For example, although total hip prosthesis and Ilizarov frames are commonplace today, 50 years ago this was not the case.
These techniques are still under development therefore caution is recommended when interpreting the information. Use of a technique to teams other than the team developing it exposes them to high risks. All cases outlined on these pages are accurately reported and represent real patients of the Dr. Guichet team. |
